Holistic Guide to Birthing in Pasadena, CA

Birthing in Pasadena offers access to a wide range of birth and postpartum options, including hospital, home birth, midwives, and a Birth Center. Pasadena has countless holistic wellness practitioners and a network of pregnancy and parenting support communities.
This Pasadena birth guide is designed to help you explore those choices with confidence and intention.

First step- Define Your Values and Choose Your Maternity Care

The first trimester can be a powerful time to slow down and listen to what your intuition is telling you.

Before you start researching baby names, registering for classes, or buying baby gear, spend time imagining how you want to be cared for — by your provider, by your birth team, and by yourself. Ask yourself:

  • What kind of support helps me feel safe and seen?

  • What does respectful care look like to me?

  • Where do I feel most comfortable giving birth?

Understanding your values and preferences now will shape every choice you make. There’s no single right way—just your way. Let it be intentional, informed, and supported.

USC Arcadia Hospital NOPE!

Leapfrog Statistics for USC Arcadia

USC Arcadia Maternity Floor is just a few miles down the 210 from Pasadena, but I cannot recommend that birthing location. USC Arcadia’s Labor and Delivery Floor boasts an ABNORMALLY HIGH episiotomy rate.

If you would like to read more about USC Arcadia’s episiotomy rate, visit my blog post on the topic.

Home birth in Pasadena

Midwifery Care at your home

Accreditation: Licensed Midwives Serving Los Angeles County

Does the idea of your care providers coming to you sound appealing? Are you curious about birthing at your house or apartment in the Pasadena Area?

Home birth can be a safe option for low-risk families seeking personalized, low-intervention care in the comfort of their home. With the right midwife team and thoughtful preparation, families can experience a grounded, powerful, and safe birth without leaving their home.

Midwifery care is centered on informed consent and informed refusal. Midwives believe that you are the decision maker for your body and that birth is a normal physiologic event, not just a medical event to be managed.

Water birth is available for home births, too. Home birth midwives are experienced with all kinds of births, including toilet births, bed births, hallway births, or living room floor births. They can catch a baby just about anywhere!

  • Jessica Diggs, CPM, LMjessicadiggs.com
Jessica offers holistic, evidence-based home birth midwifery care, prenatal visits, and childbirth education, with a focus on individualized, inclusive support.

  • Julia Underwood, CPM, LMjuliaunderwood.com

Moxie Care

1416 El Centro St., Ste 100, South Pasadena, CA
(626) 399-0649

Midwife Sara Howard and OB Bente Kaiser of Moxie Birth Center also offer maternity care for pregnant parents who want to give birth in a hospital. It is a blend of midwifery care and obstetric care.

What that looks like is you see the midwife team at Moxie for individualized prenatal care, but when it comes to labor, the birth happens at Huntington Hospital, where Dr Bente Kaiser has admitting privileges.

This is a unique birth option for Los Angeles and could be perfect for someone who is high-risk but is looking for personalized, holistic prenatal care. This might also be right for someone who:

  • Had a previous cesarean,

  • Has a medical condition that increases risks to themselves or to the baby,

  • Knows they want access to an epidural for pain relief

  • Knows their baby will need NICU care immediately after birth

OB/GYN Hospital Practices

These OB practices have their offices in Pasadena. That means you would visit their office for prenatal visits (like wellness checks, lab draws, ultrasounds, prenatal care), but then you would give birth at the hospital where the OB has admitting privileges. Here are a few popular Pasadena OB practices that my clients have chosen.

These are big, important decisions

“Childbirth is a transformational experience that alters a parent’s knowing of who they are. It is an epic journey, one that takes parents to the dark woods of their own powerful undoing.”

— Britta Bushnell, Transformed by Birth: Cultivating Openness, Resilience, and Strength for the Life-Changing Journey from Pregnancy to Parenthood

Take Things One Step at a Time…

First

Tune into your own desires for your birth. YOUR desires may be different from those of people in your circle or your family. That’s ok! Be honest with yourself and your partner about what will support you on your journey to meet your baby..

second

Begin seeking the answers to the questions your heart is asking. Meet with some care providers, interview them, and see how it feels to be in their presence. Do they make you feel safe and respected? Do they seem rushed or dismissive? If they don’t align with you, keep looking!

THen

The next step is to continue adding to your support team. Would you like a doula at your side? What could you do to care for your body, mind, and spirit as your baby is growing?

Creating your Birth Team

Next Step: Create your network of pregnancy support in Pasadena.

Preparation for birth focuses on the Body, Mind, and Spirit so you can nurture all aspects of yourselves. Here is a list of Pasadena-area practitioners who offer experienced prenatal support. The list includes: Pasadena Birth and Postpartum Doulas, Acupuncture, Prenatal Yoga, Pelvic Floor PT, Prenatal Massage, Chiropractic Care, and Birth Education Classes.

Doula Support

What does a doula actually do—and how can one support my birth or postpartum experience?

Doulas offer non-medical emotional, physical, and informational support, helping families feel cared for before, during, and after birth. Whether you’re preparing for labor or adjusting to life with a newborn, a doula’s presence can make the experience more grounded and connected.

  • Earthside Holistic specializes in postpartum care, focusing on nourishing meals, emotional support, and overnight newborn care that allow families to rest and recover more deeply.

How can yoga and mindful movement support me during pregnancy and postpartum?

  • Yoga House Pasadena offers a wide range of classes for prenatal and postpartum bodies, both in person and online. Their instructors provide thoughtful modifications and support for every stage of pregnancy and recovery.

Chiropractic Care in Pregnancy

Why would someone see a chiropractor during pregnancy?

Prenatal chiropractic care can help align the pelvis and spine, reduce back and hip pain, and create more comfort as the body changes. It also supports optimal fetal positioning and smoother postpartum recovery.

  • Focus Chiropractic provides family-centered chiropractic care, supporting pregnancy alignment, pelvic balance, and postpartum mobility.

  • Innate Family Chiropractic offers gentle prenatal and pediatric chiropractic care for families in Pasadena, with a focus on nervous system regulation and birth preparation.

Massage Therapy

Are prenatal massages different from regular massages?

Yes. Prenatal massage is adapted for the changing body of pregnancy and offers targeted relief from back pain, swelling, and tension while supporting circulation and relaxation. Postpartum massage can promote healing, balance hormones, and reduce stress.

  • Sparrow’s Nest Massage specializes in prenatal and postpartum massage, offering deeply restorative sessions designed to nurture both physical comfort and emotional well-being.

  • Alyssa Kate, a Pasadena-based massage therapist, offers therapeutic and prenatal sessions that blend deep tissue techniques with gentle, grounding touch for expecting and new parents.

Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy in Pregnancy

Why would I see a pelvic floor physical therapist before birth?

Pelvic floor physical therapy supports the muscles, ligaments, and connective tissue of the pelvis — areas deeply impacted by pregnancy and birth. These sessions can help prevent or resolve symptoms like pain, incontinence, or heaviness, and they play a vital role in straightforward vaginal birth and long-term pelvic floor health.

  • Femina Physical Therapy offers specialized prenatal and postpartum pelvic floor therapy to help restore vitality and confidence, support strength, and facilitate recovery at all stages.

  • Lindsay Brunner, PT, DPT, offers compassionate, evidence-based pelvic health care focused on prenatal and postpartum rehabilitation, emphasizing functional movement and whole-body integration.

Childbirth Education

How can childbirth education help me prepare for birth and early parenthood?

Childbirth education builds knowledge and confidence, helping expectant parents understand the stages of labor, comfort measures, decision-making, and what to expect in the early days with a newborn. Pasadena offers several trusted instructors and community-based classes that blend evidence-based information with personalized support.

  • Imagine Your Birth offers comprehensive childbirth education designed to empower families through knowledge, communication, and a calm approach to labor and birth. Classes include practical coping tools, partner preparation, and postpartum planning.

  • Village Birth hosts childbirth and newborn classes that bring together community, conversation, and connection. Their group classes emphasize comfort techniques, partner involvement, and early postpartum transitions.

Insurance, Sliding Scale, and Low-Cost Birth Support in Pasadena

Because every family deserves support that feels possible — here are some ways to access doula, midwifery, and postpartum care without financial strain.

Insurance Reimbursement Options

Pasadena and the greater Los Angeles area have insurance-covered options that make birth and postpartum support more accessible to families with certian coverage..

Medi-Cal Doula Program

Many Medi-Cal plans now include doula care as a covered benefit. These programs provide both birth and postpartum support, helping families receive guidance and comfort throughout pregnancy, labor, and the early weeks after birth. You can contact your Medi-Cal managed care provider to request a list of approved doulas and learn how to access services in your area.

Kaiser Permantente Reimbursement

Kaiser Permanente offers partial reimbursement for doula services in certain plans. Families can reach out to Member Services or their OB office to ask about available reimbursement options and how to submit the necessary paperwork.

Carrot Fertility & Insurance based Reimbursement

Some private insurance plans also reimburse for doula or lactation support when proper documentation is submitted. If you plan to use insurance, ask your provider to supply an itemized invoice and diagnostic codes, and confirm with your insurer before booking services.

Low-Cost & Accessible Support Options

The Victoria Project

The Victoria Project is a nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to alternative, midwifery-led maternity care, including birth center and home births, doula services, postpartum care, lactation support, acupuncture, pelvic floor therapy, and more. They offer direct grants to individuals and care providers, helping families cover the costs of care that might otherwise feel out of reach.

To apply for aid, you can visit the Victoria Project’s website and look for their “Funding” or “Request Support” page. Applications generally involve completing a short form, describing your care plan and financial need, and sometimes providing documentation from your provider or doula. Availability is limited and funding rounds may open periodically, so it’s wise to check their site often or subscribe to their newsletter for announcements.

No-cost Online Resources
Social media can also be a place for learning and advocacy when used intentionally. Accounts that focus on birth education, postpartum recovery, and maternal health equity share information, reassurance, and community for those navigating pregnancy and new parenthood.

FAQ-Planning to birth in Pasadena, CA

What’s the difference between a midwife and a doula?

A midwife is a licensed medical provider trained to monitor the health and safety of both the birthing person and the baby throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. A doula is a non-medical support person who offers emotional, physical, and informational care — helping families feel confident, calm, and supported before, during, and after birth.

Midwives manage the clinical aspects of care, including monitoring vital signs, assisting with the delivery, and providing medical assessments. Doulas focus on comfort, advocacy, and emotional presence — offering guidance, reassurance, and continuity of support wherever you give birth.

You can read more about how these roles complement each other in my post, What’s the Difference Between a Midwife and a Doula?

How do I find the right provider for me?

Finding the right provider begins with understanding what matters most to you. Take some quiet time to reflect on your values, your hopes for birth, and the kind of care that helps you feel safe and respected. For some, that means choosing a hospital-based OB who values clear communication and shared decision-making. For others, it might be a midwife who offers continuity of care and a slower, more relational approach.

In all my years as a doula, one of the best things you can do is: Ask questions early — about communication, availability, and how they handle the kinds of scenarios that are important to you. Notice how you feel during each interaction. Do you feel heard? Do they make space for your questions? Those small details can tell you a lot.

You might find it helpful to visit multiple providers or birth settings before deciding. Whether you choose a midwife, OB, or family physician, the most important thing is that your care feels aligned with your body, your values, and your sense of trust. I don’t like my doctor. When is it too late to change?

It’s never too late to seek care that feels aligned and supportive. You deserve a provider who listens to you, respects your choices, and helps you feel safe in your body and decisions. Sometimes it takes a while to realize that the relationship isn’t the right fit — and that’s okay.

Even late in pregnancy, you can switch to another OB, midwife, or care team. Trust your instincts. If something feels off, reach out to a new provider or birth center to ask whether they’re accepting clients. Many families find that changing care, even in the third trimester, brings a sense of relief and renewed confidence heading into birth.

You don’t have to stay in a care model that doesn’t feel right. Finding the right fit — someone who hears you and honors your vision for birth — can make all the difference.

How can I prepare emotionally for birth?

Emotional preparation for birth begins with slowing down and creating space to connect — with your body, your partner, and your intentions for this experience. Reading stories and evidence-based books about labor and postpartum can help you feel informed and grounded; you can find some of my favorites in my Books for Labor and Books for Postpartum posts. Building a gentle movement or meditation practice can help regulate the nervous system and cultivate trust in your body’s rhythms.

It’s also valuable to have open, ongoing conversations with your partner or support team about what feels most important to you — things like communication, advocacy, and how you’d like to be cared for. These moments of connection can be as powerful as any birth class, setting the tone for a supported and confident transition into parenthood.

How can a Doula support me in Pregnancy and Postpartum?

A doula offers steady, non-medical support for both body and mind — guiding families through the unknowns of pregnancy and birth with presence, knowledge, and care. Working with a doula means having someone in your corner who listens, advocates, and helps you feel grounded through every stage of the process.

At Los Angeles Birth, I provide birth and postpartum doula services for families across Pasadena and South Pasadena. Whether planning a home birth, a hospital delivery, or a birth center experience, my approach centers on personalized care, evidence-based information, and deep respect for each family’s choices.

Alongside continuous labor support, I help parents prepare for postpartum recovery through realistic planning, lactation guidance, and self-care tools. My goal is to ensure that families don’t just make it through this transition — they feel connected, supported, and seen in it.

“Rebecca was truly the perfect energy to have by our side — calm, grounded, and intuitive. She supported me physically through contractions with movement and positioning, and emotionally by helping us advocate for ourselves and make decisions we felt good about every step of the way.”
