FAQ: Birth Center Birth vs Home Birth With a Midwife
What is the main difference between a birth center and a home birth?
The primary difference is location. Birth center births happen in a dedicated facility, while home births take place in your own home. The midwifery model of care is often very similar. Typically, birth centers can serve more clients each month because they work as a team, whereas home birth midwives have smaller client loads.
Are the same types of midwives involved?
In many cases, yes. Licensed midwives attend both birth center and home births and are medical professionals trained in physiologic birth, newborn assessment, and emergency skills. The difference is not the provider or their education, but only the location of birth.
Why do some families prefer birth centers?
Birth centers offer a home-like environment while the midwives host you in their space. They have everything ready and accounted for in a space designed specifically for birth.
Birth Centers typically have a team of midwives who care for you throughout pregnancy and birth, which some people prefer.
Why do some families prefer home birth?
Home birth allows families to remain in their own comfortable, familiar space throughout labor, avoiding travel and maintaining full control over the environment. Home-birth midwives usually work independently, so you have one midwife taking care of you through the pregnancy and birth.
What happens if a hospital transfer is needed?
Both birth centers and home birth midwives plan for hospital transfer when needed. Midwives in both settings are equipped with oxygen and resuscitation tools, as well as a Doppler to listen to the baby’s heartbeat, and medication to control maternal postpartum bleeding.
Which option is safer?
For low-risk pregnancies with proper screening and transfer planning, both birth center and home birth can be safe options. Safety is influenced more by provider experience, communication, and protocols than by location alone.
Questions to Ask When Touring a Birth Center
When comparing birth centers, consider asking the team:
Whether insurance is accepted directly or via reimbursement
What are the hospital transfer options, and how common is it? Are there OBs who accept your birth center clients needing additional medical care?
If I need to transfer to the hospital, do you or someone from your team accompany me?
What’s the availability of water birth; are there situations where it is not recommended in labor?
Do you have Nitrous Oxide available for pregnant people in labor?
How often do you support VBAC births? Is there VBAC eligibility and criteria?
How do you support lactation after birth? What do the postpartum visits look like?
